When I arrived
Xoom about a week ago I turned it on and I was not really blown away. I use a lot of material, and my first impression of Xoom just was not stellar. But I could see the potential, so I continued to use it, I have a few applications, I began to learn the interface and depth characteristics.
At some point during day 2 of using
Xoom it really hit me.
Xoom and the IPAD is like chess. When you start playing chess (or attempting to use
Xoom to my analogy) you feel overwhelmed and confused. You can not really make things easy, you do not understand the options, it is simply not a good first impression. On the other hand, your first game of checkers (or the use of IPAD) is likely to be fairly smooth. It is not complicated, most of all the options and the terms are clear and easy to understand and your first game will be close enough to your hundredth.
But when you begin to understand
Xoom (and failures), it really starts to grow on you. You see what you can do, how, incredible depth and capacity of the unit. Although IPAD (or woman) players still have a lot of experience itself again and again, with the daily experience of Xoom makes the device more powerful and enjoyable to use. Ultimately, Xoom a much better product than any of its competitors, just a little time for you to learn what it is and how to get the most out of it.
As you can see from the last three paragraphs, I was not really impressed by
Xoom to start. I was not even sure it would replace my current unit for the most part. But in two days, I began to really "get" the device.
What happened when I needed to review and comment on someone sent me a PDF. I downloaded it from my e-mail, and could even put it in the memory
Xoom wherever I wanted in the folder where I wanted. Wow, that's really cool, can not do it in competition. Then I could open it in a PDF reader, with this fancy software (which I found easily on the market). I went through and did what I needed (with a superb tool freehand drawing, it was a kick!), So I jumped back on e-mail address, attached PDF edited and sent. Now, maybe I never tried hard enough, but I do not think it is possible for some of the competition. The freedom to download files, do whatever you need, and send them again. IPad on applications I used, it still requires the files to be in something that Dropbox, which is fine, except he would have done what I did is impossible without the aid of a computer .
Another "wow" moment came when I wanted to get ebooks on the device. Now, on my Apple products, it is usually a pain, you connect the camera to your computer, go to Open iTunes, go to a particular tab, and a specific area, and a certain function, and if you do it well, you can drag your books on the reader. It was fairly simple to
Xoom. For e-books I had on my computer I just drop them in the Dovecote, when I have them on
Xoom, and with the help of file manager Xoom I can easily move to a new "Books" I made folder in the Documents folder. Fast, easy, fast and makes the unit rather than on the PC.
But what blew me away was when I wanted books from the Web. Using the regular browser, I could download from the Internet directly to the device. I then used the File Manager again and just move them to the appropriate folder. This really does not impress me, my tablet disconnected from the computer, I could surf the entire web, download stuff and then use them all without ever having to attach to my computer. I was hooked.
With my new power which does not require my computer to use my tablet I delete a
Android App Development Forum. This developer has posted a bunch of programs that have been cool in beta, or wanted to promote. On competing aircraft, the only way to get an application is sanctioned and controlled by gate, not on
Android (and
Xoom).
Xoom use the browser, I bounce off the forum, I downloaded the beta program, and then I could easily install them. Again, this is all about the device, and these applications were not approved, impressive.
Another example of something that impressed me is on my third day with the device. I was with CNN app (which is free and optimized tablet, go check it) and I saw a video of a story I found really interesting, but it was one of those who are just teaser and the rest are on another site. When I found these videos on my iPad I just try to remember to watch later on a computer, as they inevitably flash based. Not so with Xoom, I typed in the address, the flash at full load, and I watched the video in full screen without problems.
This growth process more comfortable with the team and learn what he could do in these last days. At every turn, I find something amazing that it was not possible for competitors tablets. I discovered the glory of widgets (small things custom desktop to display the weather or the news or otherwise). I found a wallpaper line (mobile animated wallpapers that can change and adapt to things like weather). I kept finding new features and uses.
One thing I am talking about is perhaps more technical than the rest of my opinion is the screen. I use my tablet for reading, I started to use e-books a while ago and I found the tablets that it works well for her. I do most of my reading at night before bed, so the screen backlight is actually good compared to a traditional reader. Anyway, is one of the things that has always bothered me about the eReader IPAD as the pixel density (which is the number of pixels (blocks or squares of color) in each inch of screen space) is very low. IPAD has somewhere around 130PPI (pixels per inch). He was so weak that it really gave me eyestrain significant to read the disc, I could see the pixels, and it was not really just a great reading experience. This was so pronounced that the last month I had actually done most of my reading on a fourth-generation iPod Touch. It has a smaller screen but higher resolution.
Anyway,
Xoom has a significant increase in resolution and pixel density. With its higher resolution pixels that has about 33% more than the IPAD, about 300,000 more pixels. It's something you can immediately see if you look at any text. It is much smoother and easier to read on
Xoom. But on the other side of the iPad has a display type, which has better viewing angles and color and contrast. In my case, I do not really care, I find the pixel density is 1000 times more important than small improvements in color or angles, but I think I should talk about it.
My point in these last two paragraphs is that
Xoom is a much better device to display text in one of the lower resolution of the competition. If you are looking for a shelf to read your newspaper and books and websites, then you definitely should give
Xoom or tablets to higher resolution at a glance. In my opinion, the resolution on the IPAD / IPAD 2 is not the case for text.
Welp, it's really a long drawn out, so I guess I should conclude. I know it's not like the usual read, but I really wanted to give people an idea of the experience of using
Xoom cons just give facts and distribution and comparisons. The
Xoom is a device that improves exponentially the more you use it. After several days of use, I really can not imagine returning to the limitations and frustrations of the competition. But on my first day I was not very impressed, so be sure to stay with her and get used to. Now, I go to dinner with me and I'll take my
Xoom, streaming video, thanks to the wonderful introduction of the flash, the competition will remain on the board (likely in the foreseeable future).
I would just mention that I give
Xoom four stars because it is not perfect. For reference, after using
Xoom I'd probably give IPAD / 2:03 pm IPAD stars. There are still improvements that can be done with tablets. I really feel like
Android and
Xoom are on track, but it is still not what I would call a perfect pill is simply the best that is available now (for my usage).
I hope someone will find my review helpful, please feel free to ask any questions you may have in the comments.
